Thoughts on Writing, from an International Writing Program Fellow

video

I always start with a theme,
something that puzzles me
So I see writing as research.
To kind of try and solve a problem,
or to kind of move into the next question.

I try to find the best medium
that fits the problem that I am trying to solve
So it's not necessarily only books
But it can be translated into an installation
or it can be translated into a dance piece,
but it's very much related to words and to drawings.
So that is always the starting point.

Considering only the books
that I have published so far
They are always very clearly about one
specific thing that disturbed me for quite a while.
That books, called "The Banquet" is about
immortality and about rewriting our major
narratives.

Whether like the science narrative
about this idea that we can extend our lives forever,
but also this idea that you know reproduction,
and how our family ties is also a way of being immortal,

So then I kind of find my way into the theme.
Into something that bothers me
and writing is a good way to deal with it.
