Before joining CBYX, Nyssa’s parents encouraged her to spend two months in Cologne, Germany, to study German and broaden her horizons. Although Nyssa initially felt reluctant to leave her friends , she soon discovered a newfound love for travel and developed a deeper appreciation for Germany. Inspired by that experience, she searched for opportunities to study abroad and found the CBYX program. Drawn in by its goal of building new connections between the United States and Germany, Nyssa recognized it as the perfect opportunity for her.
Nyssa eagerly began her CBYX year, but like all exchange students, she has faced challenges. For example, Nyssa remembers feeling shy about helping herself to a snack because she felt like a guest in someone else's home. She also found it intimidating when she had to write an essay entirely in German after only a few months of learning the language. Over time, her host family’s kindness and support helped her feel at home and comfortable enough to help herself to a snack whenever she wants. Nyssa also feels proud of how much her German has improved and that she was able to complete that essay.
Nyssa has learned the importance of trying new things during her exchange. When she first learned about a dance class at her host school, she was intrigued but chose not to sign up. After regretting that decision, Nyssa felt delighted when the sign-up sheet opened again and decided not to let the opportunity pass this time. This experience, along with her overall exchange year, has helped her become more open to new opportunities.Through her CBYX experience, Nyssa has challenged herself, become more independent, and built meaningful new relationships. To anyone considering an exchange program, Nyssa offers simple advice: “Just do it. If you don’t try it out, you will spend your entire life wondering what would’ve happened if you just went abroad that one year.”
Congratulations, Nyssa!
