Since arriving to Germany, Howey has made it a goal to learn as much German as possible and immerse fully in the culture. Some of Howey’s favorite host family activities include going on outings, watching the Voice of Germany, and taking walks. After learning of Howey’s passion for music, Howey’s host mother, a CBYX alumna herself, reached out to the Iserlohner City Musicians to ask if Howey could engage with them. The group warmly invited Howey to join, and by the end of the first rehearsal, the director invited Howey to lead the next practice. Despite little preparation and having only studied the language for two months, Howey has gone on to lead band rehearsals fully in German.
Howey’s CBYX year thus far has involved German language study and taking university classes such as physics and computer science in German. In the spring, Howey plans to intern as an electrician and provide technical support to the local theater. Howey has already traveled to ten out of Germany’s sixteen states and plans to visit the remaining ones before the end of the program. One of Howey’s most memorable trips this year was visiting the German Bundestag, where Howey had a discussion on nuclear energy with an official, despite only six months of German experience. Another was visiting the European Parliament and learning about the valuable role Germany plays in the European Union.
Through this CBYX experience in Germany, Howey is gaining greater perspective in life and confidence in career goals. Upon completing the program, Howey plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. Until then, Howey aims to continue improving German skills, seeking new vocational opportunities, and building friendships.
Congratulations, Howey!
