Anel giving an International Education Week Presentation
Anel finds pleasure in helping others. She spent 15 hours one day setting up, serving food, cleaning up, and then lighting the luminaries during a Relay for Life event. She spends almost every Sunday reading and playing games with children. She helped feed the homeless at a local shelter and picked oranges and tangerines with the Harvest Hope organization to donate to homeless shelters and food pantries.
During the holidays, Anel and her cluster spent three days of winter break traveling to local veterans’ homes, handing out presents and singing carols. She shared that the highlight of those days were listening to the veterans’ life stories and sharing her Kazak culture with them. Anel described her visit as more than volunteering, “…it was an opportunity to talk to wise people, take care of those people who did a lot for us, and to say thank you, on behalf of the future generation.” Anel also spent time organizing and cleaning American flags, which will be used to decorate veteran graves on Memorial Day.
During the week, Anel volunteers at “Used Treasures”, a non-profit thrift store where the proceeds support a local nursing home. She also organizes and cleans the store and decorates it for holidays. She loves volunteering there. Her duties come naturally to her and she enjoys the company of her co-volunteers. In fact, she enjoys it so much, that she recently started volunteering more there.
Anel’s passion for helping the community is what drives her to succeed. This passion will lead Anel to many more successes in her future.
Congratulations, Anel!
