The U.S. Department of State and German Bundestag are proud to recognize Ida Herbst as the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) German Participant of the Month! Ida, a CBYX High School program participant from Besigheim, Germany, lives with the Farley family in Buena Vista, Virginia after being placed by CIEE.
When Ida arrived in the United States, she approached the experience with an open mind instead of retreating from the unfamiliar. Although living in a new country and starting a new school presented challenges, Ida embraced each opportunity with courage and persistence. She reached out to classmates, started conversations, and became involved in her host school’s music scene. As she took these steps, she began to feel more at home and built some incredible new friendships.
Ida actively participates in her host community by volunteering regularly and fostering curiosity and appreciation for Germany among her American peers. Her love of music helps her connect with others and transition into her new school. By joining the marching band and pep band, Ida meets new people, refines her musical talents, and promotes school spirit. She performs at every home football and basketball game, experiencing and contributing to the excitement and camaraderie of American sports culture.
Ida shares her own culture by performing traditional German dances for her host family and sharing authentic German cuisine with others. She also performed with her host sister at her school’s talent show, introducing peers to German language and musical traditions. Ida aspires to complete over 100 hours of community service this year and has already completed over 60 hours. She assists at a children’s art class and a local community arts festival, and she volunteers almost every week at a local church that offers food and clothing to those in need.
During her exchange year, Ida has formed new friendships, contributed meaningfully to her host community, and developed a newfound appreciation for the American way of life. Through these experiences, she has become more independent and outgoing, overcome challenges, and demonstrated what it means to be an engaged citizen diplomat.
Congratulations, Ida!
