Tuana learned about CBYX when she came across a poster at her high school in Germany. Tuana had long dreamed of attending an American high school. When she found out she was selected, she was excited to fulfil that dream and eager to learn about American culture, build life-long friendships, and serve as a citizen ambassador, promoting goodwill between the United States and Germany.
Something that has stood out to Tuana during her exchange year is how involved American students are in sports and extracurriculars. Tuana describes the “dedication, spirit, energy and passion” that Americans possess as being “truly inspiring.” While living in the United States, Tuana has taken advantage of the extracurricular opportunities available to her. Tuana engaged in sports every season of the school year by joining the cross-country, cheer, and softball teams. She found that by stepping out of her comfort zone and learning a new sport, she was able to experience personal growth, build new friendships, and make valuable memories.
Tuana has also dedicated herself to helping out in her local community by completing over 100 hours of community service. She notes that some of her most meaningful experiences have been volunteering at cancer awareness events, heart screening events, and supporting sick children at the Ronald McDonald House. Volunteering has helped her learn new things and connect with others, all while making a difference. She also organized a “German Immersion Camp,” where she helped others also understand her culture!
Congratulations, Tuana!
