March 2024 CBYX German Participant of the Month

We are pleased to announce Theresa Harzer as the March 2024 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) German Participant of the Month!  Theresa, a CBYX High School program participant placed by AFS, is hosted by the Keefe family in Dousman, Wisconsin.

Theresa is involved in many activities.  At school, she is part of the Junior Optimism Club, where members often volunteer to raise money for people in need.  Theresa also joined the tennis and softball teams.  While she has played tennis for eleven years, softball is a completely new sport for Theresa.  Learning all the rules and techniques for the upcoming season has been a lot of work, but she is getting support from those around her.  Her coach is excited to introduce Theresa to the sport and is working to get her prepared for the season, and her host family is taking her to the park for batting practice.

Theresa, who has been volunteering at her local fire brigade in Germany for three years, is also a member of the local Western Lakes Fire Brigade.  She says, “I was just hoping to see a fire station in America.  I didn’t think I’d be able to participate, but after meeting with a local fire fighter and explaining that I’m an exchange student and fire brigade volunteer in Germany, he invited me to train with them.”  She has learned a lot about first aid and other ways to be helpful in an emergency.  In addition, Theresa spent three consecutive days volunteering at the fire station and even cooked German food for the firefighters!

Since Theresa loves cooking, she has prepared many traditional German dishes such as Rouladen, Kaesespaetzle, and Schnitzel for people in her community.  Cooking is also one of the ways she connects with her host family who like German food.  Theresa says, “It did not take long for me to feel comfortable with my new family and we are having a fun time getting to know each other.  All the small things that we do, like playing games, watching movies, cooking, walking the dog, or simply talking have made me feel like they are my real family.  When I arrived here, I immediately fell in love with my area in Wisconsin and called it my home.”

Congratulations, Theresa!
