November 2025 CBYX U.S. Participant of the Month

The German Bundestag and U.S. Department of State are pleased to announce Avalon Weidner as the America 250 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) U.S. Participant of the Month for November 2025! Avalon, a CBYX high school program participant from Morgan, Utah, and recruited by CIEE, is hosted by the Krause family in Weimar, Germany.

Avalon first learned about CBYX through a flyer posted at her school and was inspired to apply because of her father’s upbringing in Germany.  To her delight, she was accepted into the program, embarking on a transformative journey of learning the German language, building invaluable friendships, and immersing herself in a new culture.

As a citizen ambassador, Avalon has embraced opportunities to share her American heritage while learning about German life.  Every Wednesday, she visits her English teacher’s 12th-grade class to discuss American history, culture, and current events.  These sessions have fostered meaningful cultural exchange, leaving her classmates with a deeper understanding of the United States.  Avalon has also joined a club where she contributes to initiatives that promote understanding and collaboration within her school community.

Avalon’s host family has been instrumental in making her transition to life in Germany smooth and welcoming.  Their warmth and hospitality have helped Avalon feel at home in Weimar.  She especially enjoys going to local festivals with her host family.  These outings have helped her get closer to them and experience the vibrant traditions of her host community.

One of Avalon’s most impactful experiences was visiting the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.  Walking through the camp, learning of its history, and seeing the prisoners’ uniforms left a profound impression on her.  This visit helped her better understand the importance of history and remembrance.

Through her CBYX experience thus far, Avalon has grown to be more confident, knowledgeable, and independent.  As Avalon continues her exchange year, she looks forward to learning more about German culture, improving her language skills, and building connections that will last a lifetime.  She encourages others to consider exchange programs, emphasizing that while the sacrifices may seem daunting, the rewards are long lasting.  She notes that through exchange programs you can “build life-long relationships, see and understand the world better, and discover yourself.”

Congratulations, Avalon!
