Ema, a CIEE-placed American Serbia and Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE) student from Serbia, is incredibly enthusiastic about supporting her host community. Ema has volunteered for a wide variety of activities and events including the Ronald McDonald House Household Sale and the Humane Society’s annual fundraising event—Barktoberfest. She lends a hand at local Girl Scouts meetings, and gives tours of important buildings of architectural interest. As a member of a local youth group, Ema and a friend from Germany organized a workshop where they taught other group members the basic steps of the Waltz and Cha Cha dances.

Ema, an excellent student on the High Honor Roll at her host school, School of the Arts (SOTA), in Rochester, New York, takes every opportunity to participate in school activities. In addition to being a member of the volleyball and track teams, she performed in the dance concert, sings with the SOTA Singers, and ushered for school drama productions as well as assisted with the costumes.

Ema enjoys teaching her friends and host community about Serbia. She has given several presentations at public libraries where she shared the Serbian alphabet, customs, traditional dance, and her favorite Serbian pie.

Ema also was selected to participate in the Workshop for Youth Leaders in Teaching English in Washington, DC. She is looking forward to using the English teaching skills she learned to tutor students in her community in Serbia.

Congratulations, Ema!
