Molly helps foster mutual understanding daily through her work at the Leipzig Zoo. As an Intern, she looks after a variety of animals while exploring the differences between German and U.S. zoos. She regularly exchanges views and experiences related to animal science with colleagues, presents about animal care at the zoo to visitors, and creates activities for the animals while also learning to train them. She was recently featured in the German documentary show “Elefant Tiger & Co.” while caring for the animals, starting at 4:45, https://www.mdr.de/tv/programm/sendung-923516.html.
The internship was challenging to obtain as the Leipzig Zoo wasn’t initially open to hiring someone from another country. The Zoo staff have been so impressed with Molly’s work, insight, and enthusiasm, that they are not only open to but now actively seeking partnerships with other international zookeepers.
Upon arrival to her host community, Molly observed that people know very little about the United States, particularly in the more rural areas. This inspired Molly to visit a variety of schools throughout Leipzig to present and talk with students about life in America.
Additionally, she contributes to the German scientific community by participating in various research projects at the University of Leipzig, including a study on the social behavior of Macaques. Molly also participates in open-mic concerts with new friends each Monday. During the open-mic sessions she actively engages her passion for music while learning popular German songs.
Congratulations, Molly!
