Since arriving in the United States, Dusan, an ACES American-Serbia and Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE) program student from Serbia, has become an active member of his local community. Although playing soccer for his host school's team takes up a lot of his time, Dusan continues to excel in his academics. His host family is constantly at the soccer field cheering on their “Serbian son” and has made many new friends. Once the soccer season is over, Dusan plans to join the Key Club.

Dusan also eagerly teaches his friends, host family and community about Serbia and its history and has made them a few of his favorite Serbian dishes, including paprikash and stuffed peppers. During International Education Week, he gave presentations at Shasta College and to his host family’s church congregation. The audiences were very responsive and have asked him to present to other organizations in the coming months.

His host parents describe Dusan as a warm and outgoing young man who makes everyone feel at ease. Dusan volunteered at his host family’s church, after which they asked him to “man the bank” at a fundraising event.

Congratulations, Dusan!
