1. American Basketball Players Travel to Venezuela

   

   Two U.S. Sports Envoys, Kayte Christensen and Darvin Ham, joined former Maryland and current Memphis Grizzlies player, Greivis Vasquez, for a series of basketball clinics in Greivis’ hometown, Chacao, Venezuela.

2. Empowering Women and Girls: WNBA Basketball Envoys in Ukraine

   

   The State Department and NBA worked together to send former WNBA players Tamika Raymond and Nykesha Sales to Ukraine as Sports Envoys from January 28 to February 2, 2013.

   Tony Sanneh, Danielle Slaton, and Cheryl Bailey Travel to Malaysia

   

   Former U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team player Tony Sanneh and former U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team player Danielle Slaton traveled to Malaysia.

4. Sam Perkins and Dikembe Mutombo Travel to South Sudan

   

   Sports Envoys Sam Perkins and Dikembe Mutombo traveled to South Sudan in October 2011 to lead a series of basketball clinics and teambuilding exercises with young people ages 12-25.

5. South African Basketball Coaches Come to the U.S.

   

   From March 8 to 19, 2012, South African coaches met with U.S. sports professionals, held clinics with young American athletes at local schools, participated in an NBA clinic, and engaged in activities focused on team-building and injury prevention in the Washington, D.C., area.

6. Russian Volleyball Players Visit the U.S.

   

   The first sports visitor program brought Russian volleyball players and coaches to Southern California for a beach volleyball.

7. Bumping Up Efforts to Empower Women and Girls Worldwide: Gulf Nations Volleyball Coaches

   

   Under the State Department’s Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative, the Gulf Nations Volleyball Visitor Program brought 10 female volleyball coaches from Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Yemen to the U.S. for activities focused on the development of sports programs for women and girls.

   In a country like Brazil where the term futebol almost always means soccer, you might be surprised to find a team like the Recife Mariners playing American-style football.

9. Women's World Cup Initiative

   

   On June 6, 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will launch the Women's World Cup Initiative: Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports, at the Department of State with members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and youth soccer players from around the world.

10. The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Holds a Special Clinic in Japan

    

    As part of the “Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiative,” the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team took to the soccer field with Japanese girls in Sendai, Japan on March 27.
