At-a-Glance

English Language Specialists are top-tier experts in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) with an MA or Ph.D. in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field who lead intensive, high-level English language projects. Specialist projects may be in-country or virtual. In-country projects can be two weeks to three months, and virtual projects vary in length.

English Language Specialists assist U.S. Embassies in delivering and maintaining quality English language programs overseas and promoting mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. U.S. Embassies identify and define the English Language Specialist assignments, which may include teacher training, curriculum, and textbook development, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) skills development, delivering conference plenary addresses, or online course development. There is no direct English language teaching.
